Recording Information

The album “Last of the Independents” was recorded at the iconic A&M Studios located in Hollywood, California. The recording sessions took place throughout 1993 and early 1994, leading up to the album’s release in May 1994. The album was produced by the renowned Mitchell Froom, who was known for his innovative sound and had previously worked with various artists across genres.

Froom brought a fresh perspective to the recording process, utilizing his expertise in layering instruments and vocals to create a rich sonic landscape. He was joined by engineer Tchad Blake, known for his experimental approach to sound, which included using unique microphone placements and unconventional recording techniques that contributed to the album’s distinctive character. Notably, the use of vintage equipment combined with modern technology allowed the band to achieve a sound that was both classic and contemporary.

An interesting production note is the inclusion of the short track “Tequila,” which serves as a whimsical interlude on the album. This track showcases the band’s playful side, contrasting with some of the more serious themes explored in other songs.

At the time of “Last of the Independents,” the Pretenders were solidifying their legacy as a prominent band in the rock and alternative music scenes. Formed in 1978 by singer-songwriter Chrissie Hynde, the band had seen various lineup changes over the years, with Hynde being the consistent driving force. The lineup during the recording of this album included Hynde on vocals and rhythm guitar, Adam Seymour on lead guitar, Andy Hobson on bass, and drummer Martin Chambers, who had been with the band since its inception.

Prior to this album, the Pretenders had experienced a resurgence in the early 1990s with the success of their albums “Packed!” (1990) and “Last of the Independents” marked a continuation of their evolution. The band faced personal and professional challenges, including the tragic loss of original members. However, their resilience and enduring appeal were evident as they moved forward with new material that resonated with both long-time fans and new listeners.
